Analysis of Substance N

Test Procedure

You are provided with organic substance N. Carry out the following tests and write down your observations and inferences in the spaces provided.


Place all substance N in a clean boiling tube and dissolve in 10cm3 of distilled water. Divide the resulting solution into 3 portions T1, T2 & T3.

  • (i) To the 1st portion, add 2-3 drops of acidified potassium manganate
  • (ii) To the 2nd portion, add 2-3 drops of bromine water.
  • (iii) To the 3rd portion, add all the sodium carbonate provided.

Tips: Follow the procedure sequentially and the sytem monitor instructions.
